More accolades for Sutho at Sydney Hockey Awards Evening

Our Premier League team was out in force last night for Sydney Hockey’s Annual Presentation.

Congratulations to our Premier League Coach Peter Tait who was awarded Sydney Hockey’s 2017 Coach of the Year last night at Sydney Hockey’s Awards Evening. It was a well deserved accolade for Peter who this year not only co-coached the premier league team with Jay Holley to their 7th title he also coached our U15 Sutho Metro Blue team to a premiership and as well as coaching the U15 Girls SEHA Representative team. This is Peter’s 2nd Sydney Hockey Coach of the Year Award, with his first award coming in 2011 after Sutho’s premier league premiership win. Peter has now won 3 Premier League 1 Premierships, 2 Premier League 2 Premierships and a Senior Womens 2nd Grade premiership as a coach.

Congratulations to Brendan Sharp who was awarded Sydney Hockey’s 2017 Highest Goal Scorer for Premier League 2 with a total of 21 goals for the year. Well done Brendan.

Congratulations to Blake Sanford who was awarded Sydney Hockey’s 2017 Male Indoor Player of the Year. Well done Blake.

Sutho Hockey Crowned 2017 Sydney Hockey Premier League 1 Premiers

With a nail biting finish last weekend against Ryde, the scene was set for yet another epic battle between fierce rivals Sutho and Moorebank in the 2017 Sydney Hockey Premier League 1 Grand Final.

It has been 5 years since Sutherland last won a Premier League premiership which ironically was against Moorebank and Sutherland were looking to revenge their last year’s loss in the Grand Final against Moorebank.

The game was a very tight and extremely close with both teams defending strongly and shutting down each other’s opportunities. Sutho were first to score with a drag flick by Kieran Govers from a short corner but Moorebank equalised minutes later with a short corner goal of their own and were then awarded about 7 minutes out from half time a penalty stroke which they converted to head into half time leading Sutho 2-1.

The 2nd half continued in much the same way as the 1st half with both teams again shutting down most scoring opportunities but Sutho managed to break through Moorebank’s strong defence with a well timed hit by Shayne Smith into the circle to find Matt Bennett who slotted the ball into the goal to even the score to 2-2.

With the change in momentum shifting to Sutherland, the boys started to open up Moorebank’s defence and with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game Matt Bennett found the back of the net with his trademark tomahawk shot to give Sutho the lead 3-2.

Despite Moorebank throwing everything they had at Sutho to equalise the score, Sutho’s strong defence stepped up another notch and held off any attack Moorebank threw at them to go on and take the 2017 Title with a 3-2 win and the club’s 7th Sydney Premier League 1 Premiership (1991,92,98, 2004, 2011,12, 2017).

Congratulations to all the players and coaches Peter Tait and Jay Holley and manager Peter Krepp on a successful 2017 campaign.

Congratulations to Matt Bennett on being named Best and Fairest in the 2017 Grand Final.

Congratulations to Moorebank Hockey Club on their 2017 season.

Grand Final Fever U15 and U17 Metro & Premier League Men

Congratulations to our U15 Sydney Metro team Sutho Blue and our Senior Mens Premier League team on their preliminary final wins on the weekend taking them through to this weekend’s Grand Finals.

Both games were action packed games that came down the wire and the two teams showed the true Sutho fighting spirit. Well done.

U15 Sutho Blue had a 3-2 win on Friday night over Northern Districts to progress through to the U15 Sydney Metro Grand Final. They join our U17 Metro Team who won through to the Grand Final two weeks ago with a 2-1 win over Ryde which was another close game.

The highlight of the weekend though belonged to our Senior Men’s Premier League team who stormed into the 2017 Sydney Hockey Premier League Grand Final with a 5-4 win against Ryde in extra time in a game that could possibly go down in Sutho forklore as a game to be talked about for years to come. Details on what unfolded in the game can be found on our facebook site and we encourage you to check out the videos and photos of the game.

This weekend is sure to a massive weekend for the club and our club has a strong tradition of getting out to the Grand Final games to support our teams. Also great games for our junior families to get out to and watch. Make sure you wear lots of blue and bring your best cheering voice to support all three teams. At the senior mens Grand Final Games our Supporters usually gather on side opposite the stand and where the Sutho Banner will hang.
