To All Sutho Hockey Club Members & Supporters
It’s that time of year when we all are beginning to reflect on the year that’s been and (in any spare moments) perhaps begin thinking about the year ahead of us. At least that’s what we would all like to be doing if not caught up in the end of year “Christmas Rush” at work and home!
At Sutherland Hockey Club we have a new Committee that’s looking ahead to 2015 and working on plans and initiatives to make it a really exciting and successful season for all of us.
2015 will no doubt be a challenging year for our Club – and it will be the first year for the new Sydney South Hockey Association, assuming that organisation is successfully established from the General Meeting on 14 January. I think many of you will be aware at some level of the Association Reform changes being driven by Hockey NSW that are behind the formation of the new Association. It certainly hasn’t been an easy process to get the new Association “up and running”, but really all the work that has been done in 2014 is only getting us to the starting gate. 2015 is when we will face the consequences of the new governance structures – whether that be in the way representative hockey is conducted, the way hockey development is managed in the Sutherland and St George district, or in some cases the way hockey competitions are conducted. The new Board of Management of the Association has a big task ahead of them, but with the support of all the affiliated Club’s and Hockey NSW I think they can make a real difference to the growth of hockey in our area.
I think 2015 can be a watershed year for our Club – a year where we establish some new directions, and lay the foundations for the next stage of growth for our Club. An important enabler of that growth should be the planned establishment by the new Association of two new synthetic fields at Greenhills by the end of 2015. The importance of this new venture to the growth of hockey in our area can hardly be overstated. Additional high quality playing surfaces available locally is absolutely fundamental to what we are about – providing opportunities for people in the Sutherland district to play hockey!
We have already had our first meeting of the new Club Committee – and I took the opportunity then to talk about some of the issues that I feel are really important to how we progress in 2015. There are a few topics that I think are worth highlighting to a broader audience:
– as a Committee we need to get really disciplined about managing our business – setting objectives, developing plans, monitoring performance and managing for results
– our Club needs a fully integrated management structure (Committee) that looks after men’s, women’s and junior hockey in an integrated way. we need to be “One Club”
– from a management perspective we have to get really focussed on what I’m calling “Game Development” – the growth and development of players, coaches and umpires
– our Marketing and Communications activities are another key area we have to focus on developing to help ensure all Members and Supporters are fully engaged with what’s happening with our Club, and we are positioning ourselves as best we can in the community to grow our numbers and win more supporters / sponsors
I hope you will hear a lot more about our plans in the above areas in the weeks and months ahead – and I also hope more people will see the importance and benefits of getting more involved themselves in helping us build for the future. Part of the success plan for the Committee has to be getting more dedicated people involved!
One early initiative from the Committee that I want to highlight is the establishment of a group of Age Coordinators to help manage our junior hockey operations in 2015. We have been fortunate enough to be able to attract a very capable, enthusiastic and experienced group of people to take on these important roles for us in 2015. I think they will do a wonderful job, and really help us reinvigorate the management of our junior operations next year.
2015 will be our 49th playing season – which also means we will be hard at work planning for our 50th year and a range of celebrations to mark that occasion. I hope everyone who is (and has been) involved with our Club over the previous 50 years will find reasons and opportunities to be part of those celebrations.
So to everyone, best wishes for a safe and happy Christmas and New Year – keep fit, and I look forward to seeing everyone back for a stunning 2015!
